On Sunday, 5 November 2023 he revealed his plan to hand over leadership to Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong before the impending General Election, which is scheduled for November 2025.

Addressing an audience of over 1,000 People's Action Party (PAP) members, where Lee holds the position of secretary-general and Wong as the deputy secretary-general, Lee underscored the significance of "high-quality leadership" in accomplishing the PAP Government's three fundamental objectives: effective governance, upholding integrity, and securing electoral success.

As Lee neared the conclusion of his speech, he displayed visible emotion and briefly paused, reflecting on his decades-long dedication to serving the nation in various roles.

The audience responded with a standing ovation as he shared his sentiments: “It has been my great fortune and honour to have served the country, first in the SAF (Singapore Armed Forces), and then in the party and Government throughout my entire adult life."
